Site design

There are many aspects to web design apart from just creating a good looking site. It is important to get your message across as quickly as possible, preferably on the first page of the site. Many people browsing the web will not stop at your site if it is unclear from the first page what it is all about or if it takes too long to load.

Here at Nailsea Web Design we aim to create clear and concise web sites that engage with the user and provide information in a simple and straight forward manner.  This includes clear and intuitive navigation around the site.

All our web sites go through at least two levels of testing.

  • Non-technical user testing for understandable content, usability and clear navigation. These users get no help with the site and look at it in exactly the same way as any member of the general public.  This is important because it is easy for the technical developers to become too familiar with a site and only test the parts that they know work already.

  • A complete technical test to ensure that the pages are well formed HTML, that all the functions of the site work properly (for example database activity) and that there are no loose ends such as broken links. The site is tested using a slow internet connection and several different combinations of operating system and browser.

A basic site

Usually we would expect a basic web site to contain a minimum of three pages with a simple navigation system to move around

  • Home page - the entry page to the site, with brief details about your business and what you do. Concise information to tell a user what the site is all about

  • Products page - full details of the products and services that your business supplies.

  • Contact page - most important, how new customers get in touch with you.

a site like this with 3 static pages would cost around £400 depending on content and other services that we provide.  More complex web sites are often constructed with dynamic web pages where the content changes and the pages are constructed "on the fly" often based on information stored in a database.

The contact and request for quote pages on this site are both examples of dynamic web pages.

How we work

This is a high level overview of the process we follow to create web sites. If we are updating an existing site we follow a similar procedure but some of the stages may not be needed.

  1. We will look at what you are trying to achieve with your site, think about your intended audience and gain an understanding of your business.

  2. With your input we create two basic designs for your site, incorporating your existing corporate branding or creating a new image. One of these designs will contain samples of all of the pages that you need but with no real content. At this stage we are looking to decide on the overall look of the site.

  3. We ask you to review the designs which we publish in a secure area on our web site for this purpose. Access to these sites are restricted by password so that work in progress is not visible to the general public.

  4. When you have reviewed the sites we agree on the final "look and feel" for the site and if necessary we publish a revised site for your consideration.

  5. With your help we now add the real content to the pages.

  6. You now have the opportunity to review the site while we carry out the detailed user and technical testing.

  7. Finally the completed site is published on the web and is available "live" for public access.

If you would like us to provide a no obligation quote please complete the request for quote form and we will get back to you as soon as possible, alternatively contact us for an initial consultation.
